On Feb 17, 2017, we had the official opening and unveiling of the plaques for our new ten classroom block.
We were privileged to have three local MPs attend: Shane Reti (Whangarei), Kelvin Davis (Te Tai Tokerau), and the Right Honourable Winston Peters (Northland).
What an awesome powhiri, with wonderful speeches!
Leading the haka as the guests enter
The karakia (prayer)
Our kaumatua, Matua Taipari's beautiful voice filled the hall
Each korero (speech) was completed by a waiata (song), accompanied (expertly) on guitars by Simon and Carbuncle
Crichton Christie, the chairperson of the Board of Trustees, makes a point in his speech for the tangata whenua
Shane Reti spoke for the manuhiri
As always the children listened carefully
Kelvin Davis discussed his experiences being taught by Mr Newman when he was 11
The Right Honourable Winston Peters called for a cross party hui on education (and better pay for teachers!)
The VIPs (including our kuia Taparoto George) move out to unveil the plaques on the new buildings
The plaques are unveiled
...and a kai (food and drink) to complete the ceremony. Thanks Barb, Amelia, and Simon and all the ringawera (helpers in the kitchen)
